Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ΒΎ cups (345g) all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Β½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 Β½ cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) whole milk
  • Β½ cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 2 cups (240g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 12 tablespoons (15-30ml) whole milk or heavy cream (for frosting)
  • Pinch of salt (for frosting)
  • ΒΌ cup (60ml) red, white, and blue sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat softened butter and granulated sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add flour mixture in thirds, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with flour. Mix on low speed just until combined.
  6. Drop dough by tablespoon or cookie scoop onto baking sheets about 2 inches apart. Flatten each mound gently with fingers or bottom of a sugar-dipped glass.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are set but centers still look soft. Let cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. For frosting, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add sifted powdered sugar, alternating with milk or cream and vanilla extract. Beat until fluffy and spreadable. Add a pinch of salt to balance sweetness.
  9. Spread frosting evenly on cooled cookies using an offset spatula or butter knife. Immediately sprinkle with red, white, and blue sprinkles.

Notes

Do not overbake cookies to keep them soft. Use room temperature eggs and butter for best texture. Sift powdered sugar before frosting to avoid gritty texture. Add sprinkles immediately after frosting while it’s still wet. Chilling dough 15-20 minutes before baking helps cookies keep shape. Frosting consistency can be adjusted by adding milk or powdered sugar as needed.
