This easy homemade banana bread is tender, moist, and studded with melted chocolate chips. It comes together in about 10 minutes of hands-on time and is perfect for breakfast, snack, or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 3 medium or 2 large very ripe bananas, mashed (about 1 to cups)
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan with butter or non-stick spray, or line with parchment paper leaving overhang on the long sides.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mash the bananas with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth with a few small lumps.
  3. Add the softened butter and granulated sugar to the mashed bananas. Beat with a wooden spoon or electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract if using.
  5. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  6. Add the flour mixture to the banana mixture in two additions, folding gently with a rubber spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Reserve about 1 tablespoon of chocolate chips for topping, then gently fold the remaining chocolate chips into the batter.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle the reserved chocolate chips on top. Tap the pan gently on the counter to release air bubbles.
  9. Bake for 55-65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil after 40 minutes.
  10. Cool in the pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Then run a knife around the edges, lift the bread out using the parchment, and transfer to the rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

Use overripe bananas for best flavor and moisture. Do not overmix the batter. Let the bread cool completely before slicing to avoid a gummy texture. For extra moisture, add ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt or sour cream with the eggs.
