A quick and easy breakfast recipe featuring toasted bagels topped with whipped cream cheese, smoked salmon, fresh berries, and herbs for a delightful balance of smoky, creamy, and sweet flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Plain or everything bagels, fresh and chewy
  • 23 ounces (60-85g) thinly sliced smoked salmon per bagel half
  • Full-fat cream cheese, softened (whipped cream cheese preferred)
  • 1/2 cup mixed fresh berries (blueberries, raspberries, or sliced strawberries)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup red onion, thinly sliced
  • Capers (optional)
  • Fresh lemon juice, to taste
  • Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the bagels in half horizontally.
  2. Toast the cut sides until golden brown and slightly crisp, about 2-3 minutes in a toaster or 5 minutes under a broiler.
  3. Place the softened cream cheese in a bowl and beat with a spoon or mixer until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes (optional).
  4. Thinly slice 1/4 cup of red onion into rings and finely chop 1 tablespoon of fresh dill.
  5. Rinse and drain 1/2 cup of mixed berries and pat dry gently with paper towels.
  6. Spread about 2 tablespoons of whipped cream cheese over each toasted bagel half.
  7. Layer 2-3 ounces of smoked salmon on top of the cream cheese.
  8. Scatter the sliced onions and capers (if using) over the salmon.
  9. Top each bagel with a handful of berries, distributing evenly.
  10. Sprinkle chopped dill over the top and squeeze fresh lemon juice for brightness.
  11. Finish with a crack of black pepper to taste.
  12. Serve immediately while the bagel is crisp and the cream cheese is cool and creamy.

Notes

Toast bagels well to avoid sogginess. Whipping cream cheese improves texture but is optional. Prepare toppings ahead but assemble just before serving for best texture. Frozen berries should be thawed and drained to prevent sogginess. Lemon juice brightens flavor but avoid over-saturating the bagel.
