This easy creamy pumpkin puree drain method transforms watery pumpkin puree into a silky, thick base perfect for pies, soups, and fall treats. It’s quick, simple, and enhances the texture and flavor of your pumpkin dishes.

Ingredients

  • Pumpkin puree (canned pure pumpkin or homemade pumpkin puree)
  • Paper towels or clean kitchen towel (for lining the colander)

Instructions

  1. If using canned pumpkin, open the can and stir to combine. For homemade, ensure puree is smooth and cooled to room temperature.
  2. Line a colander with a few layers of paper towels or a clean kitchen towel.
  3. Scoop the pumpkin puree into the lined colander and spread evenly.
  4. Place the colander over a mixing bowl to catch the drained liquid.
  5. Let the puree drain for 20 to 30 minutes at room temperature, or up to an hour for thicker puree. Optionally, gently press with a spatula to speed draining.
  6. Check the texture; it should be creamy and thick with little to no excess liquid.
  7. Use immediately in recipes or transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days.

Notes

Use room temperature pumpkin puree for faster draining. Gently press the puree to speed up liquid release but avoid squeezing too hard to preserve flavor. The drained liquid can be saved for smoothies or soups. Store leftover puree in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
