Tender, flaky pumpkin scones with a maple cinnamon glaze that are easy to make and perfect for autumn mornings or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, very cold and cubed
  • ½ cup pumpkin puree
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • 23 tablespoons maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 12 teaspoons milk or cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and sugar.
  3. Add cold cubed butter to the dry mixture and cut it in using a pastry cutter or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized butter pieces.
  4. In a separate small bowl, whisk pumpkin puree, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Pour wet ingredients into the dry mixture and gently fold with a spatula until just combined; do not overmix.
  6. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and pat into a circle about ¾-inch thick.
  7. Cut the circle into 8 equal wedges using a sharp knife or bench scraper.
  8. Place wedges on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them.
  9. Bake for 15-18 minutes until tops are golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  10. Cool scones on the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool for another 10 minutes.
  11. While scones cool, whisk powdered sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, and milk until a drizzle-able consistency is reached.
  12. Drizzle glaze over cooled scones and let set before serving.

Notes

Ensure butter is very cold for flaky layers. Do not overmix the dough to avoid toughness. Weigh flour for accuracy. If pumpkin puree is watery, drain it before use. Glaze should be applied only after scones have cooled slightly to prevent melting.
